AACE People – Congratulate Yourselves

It is difficult to believe it’s been nearly two years since the arrival of COVID and the start of what became a global pandemic. The struggle around the world has been difficult and long; it is clear we are all growing weary. On top of that unprecedented challenge, we see in the news, day after day, struggles, difficulties, polarization, and disharmony that would make us believe it is impossible to get along and work together. But in my heart, I simply don’t believe that. I maintain optimism and energy that we have only begun to see the extent of our capabilities. If we take time to look beyond the headlines, and listen to more than just the loudest voices, we see stories of hope, people helping people, new ideas, and fresh outlooks.

I get a similar positive feeling when I look at AACE. Although the past two years have been filled with challenges and one may think it would be a success just for an organization like AACE simply to survive, AACE has thrived. In the past few messages, I have highlighted new initiatives, celebrated successes, and communicated plans for the future. Although there are more members deserving of recognition and more successes deserving of celebration, I like to focus on the nature of how AACE people have accomplished these successes.

As President, I have the opportunity and duty to participate in a wide range of communications, meetings, and committees. I can’t help noting the difference between my AACE interactions and those that I see in the media. AACE members represent communities, countries, and cultures from around the world. My interactions have included high level executives and people just starting their careers. People with vast experience and people new to the profession. People with strong ideas about the direction of AACE and people learning what the association is all about. Regardless of the person and their perspective, one feature stands out: AACE people work together with respect and professional courtesy. Divisive and inappropriate interactions may occur, but they are the rare exception. I continue to be impressed by people with differing ideas, contrasting opinions, and diverse goals continually find ways to reach consensus and move forward. A quick look at the most recent membership survey shows that networking and interactions with peers continues to be a key driver to member satisfaction.

My previous messages have focused on outcomes and results of the work of members and staff. With this message I want to express my appreciation TO our members and staff. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a member of such an amazing organization. As we start 2022, I ask each member and the entire staff to take a minute to congratulate yourselves for being the embodiment of cooperation, courtesy, and optimism, when the world might suggest these qualities are in short supply.
